Today they’re celebrating their 10th anniversary. What an adventure it’s been, and still is.
To celebrate this birthday I was invited to join them again to talk about the essence: why we all love to create so much and what it means to us. This was my third invitation and, as always, a real pleasure.
We even came up with a plan together that you, as a loyal listener, can be part of. I also talk about the secrets behind my new KUKULCAN and how it came to be. And I’ll lift a corner of the veil on an exciting new adventure.

“Introducing the KUKULCAN, Dr. No’s latest creation, born from a year of intense experimentation. This handcrafted guitar effect is the culmination of Dr. No’s relentless pursuit of sonic and artistic innovation. Initially, Dr. No sought to craft a device that would shatter the boundaries of sound, but the prototype proved too potent, too uncontrollable. The circuit, comprising three stacked gain stages in one circuit, generated an overwhelming amount of distortion, rendering it impractical. Undeterred, Dr. No revisited the design in 2025, decoupling each gain stage by creating three separate gain stages and assigning its own circuit activation footswitch and gain potentiometer. This bold move unlocked a new dimension of nuanced natural signal changes. By preserving the inherent characteristics of each stage, Dr. No was able to coax the KUKULCAN into a cohesive, yet formidable entity.

The Skullsistors, a new creative tone invention from the mad brain of Dr. No, are Dr. No Effects Skullsistors… yes… Dr. No’s own transistors, never before seen in the world of tone devices. Dr. No’s custom-crafted Skullsistors form the 3 hearts of this ancient beast. Only a limited series was produced, making each KUKULCAN a rare gem. Merely 100 of these KUKULCAN handcrafted masterpieces will be brought to life, each one a testament to Dr. No’s handmade craftsmanship. Each KUKULCAN houses 3 Dr. No Skullsistors. The Skullsistors are an original registered intellectual property and invention by Dr. No Effects in 2025.

Beware: the KUKULCAN deceives. A hidden harmony in chaos. Like every serpent, it slithers in shadows, disguising truth in plain sight. Footswitches and potentiometer Knobs of the KUKULCAN entwine like serpents, their true allegiance….hidden.
KUKULCAN’s Footswitches masquerade as allies, their colors….a cryptic code. Yet, a pattern emerges. Color calls to color, and the corresponding light awakens, casting shadows on the truth.
The KUKULCAN is not for the faint of heart. It’s a powerhouse that demands respect, capable of unleashing a maelstrom of sound. A three-stage tone rocket that transports you to tone heaven, if you will. Those who dare to wield it will be tamed by its impressive might and great natural tones. The KUKULCAN is, in theory, a very powerful triple-stage preamp that pushes the signal into natural clipping, driven by 3 separate single gain stages powered by the custom Dr. No Effects “Skullsistors”. In principle, the KUKULCAN stacks three preamps after each other, generating a previously unheard tone without changing the character of the guitar, hand, and amp, but rather pushes the instrument’s sound outside known borders, leaving the character of each involved instrument but also the individual playing style intact.

The KUKULCAN’s staging is labeled on the device as “Rain” for the 1st stage, “Storm” for the added 2nd stage, and generates a literal “Earthquake” when adding the 3rd stage. Even when using half the setting of two stages, for example, this doesn’t sound the same as a single stage fully open. This makes the KUKULCAN a unique, one-of-a-kind natural signal exaggerator, ranging from mild and mellow to its maximum extreme.
Also inside the KUKULCAN, Dr. No added a power noise filter to eliminate power supply noise often related with preamps. The KUKULCAN uses a 9V power supply with a regular 2.1mm connector.
Kukulcan, whose name means “feathered serpent”, was a creator god and the god of rain, wind, storms, and life. Throughout Mesoamerica, the snake, due to its living habits, symbolized life both below and above the earth, serving as a connection between the gods and humanity. Kukulkan as a creator figure who brought order to the world and taught early communities important skills such as agriculture, art, and astronomy.

KUKULCAN will be released March 2026, handmade in two series of only 50 with a total edition of only 100 handmade numbered and signed copies, exclusively at and/or by Dr. No carefully selected and curated music shops.
Update on the build process of Dr. No’s newest creation, the KUKULCAN. As you’re probably aware, Dr. No’s effects are always handmade. Every part is meticulously crafted, concepts are thought out, and tonal design is done to the highest level. The KUKULCAN is no exception. This time, the bar is set even higher.
Integrating Dr. No’s own transistors, the “Skullsistors,” took more effort and time than expected. The time and investment required were underestimated, but they’re almost ready to equip the KUKULCAN.

Meanwhile, the housing is coated and the design is silkscreened by Dr. No. There was a challenge with the KUKULCAN print on the front. The goal was to have it flocked for a more tangible, beastly effect, which worked out better than expected.

The knobs Dr. No envisioned didn’t exist, so they were sculpted and cast exactly as imagined. The in-house made knobs get a flock layer to fit the KUKULCAN’s overall feel.
